We’ve now gotten to the point where advances in technology, software and oversees outsourcing has dramatically decreased the costs to produce digital assets such as websites, flash animations, and online videos. A website that cost $20,000 only 10 years ago is now easily done for $2,000. Blogs are free. YouTube is free. I myself employ a team of people in the Philippians for $4/hour instead of paying $25/hour for US labor.
One of the things that I now recognize is that web designing, interface designing and video production is only going to be a valuable asset if it is looked at as artwork. It’s an artistic experience that you offer your target audience. It’s an artistic experience that answers their questions, that pulls at their emotions and piques their interest.
As I develop my business plan, I have every intention of continuing to “create artwork” for my clients in addition to the training and consulting I will be doing. Video production will be a mainstay, as will interactive web portals (combination of web design/animation/gaming/applications). More and more I intend to empower the people around me. My days of being a technician are over. I’m now surrounded by people who are brilliant animators, photo-compositors, video editors and graphic designers – who do this stuff even better than I ever could. I’ll continue to oversee the projects and take care of the clients so they keep coming back for more.
A core area I would like to develop competency in is in the field of mobile marketing. Mobile Marketing is the future. It’s a dangerous space right now, but the art of impacting people powerfully on their hand held devise – being their personal concierge that provides them tremendous value – is an arena I want to be in immediately.
